Our brilliant mentee Kara, from Tyne and Wear, recently challenged her mentor, Louise, to take part in the Junior Great North Run. The duo completed the 4k run together, raising much-needed funds for our charity and showing just how impactful their mentoring relationship has become.

Kara and Louise with superhero masks in their TGN tshirtsMentor Louise, who works as Director of Corporate Services at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, was initially unsure about joining the run but was motivated by Kara’s enthusiasm and commitment. She joked before the event, “I’m not so worried about running 4k, but I am worried about keeping up with Kara - she’s a real athlete!”

Kara, who is interested in pursuing a sports-based career, is only halfway through her mentoring programme with Louise, but they have already built a strong connection. Kara’s invitation to Louise to join her in the run is a perfect example of how mentors can be just as inspired to try new things as our mentees through our programme.

The response to Kara's fundraising effort has been brilliant, with lots of generous donations and some wonderful messages of support. One comment read, “Keep up the good work Kara you're such an amazing young lady” and another expressed, “You are so fabulous Kara, you go from strength to strength, you are a total inspiration, I want your autograph now before you become so famous.”

After the event Kara told us, “It was a great day and everyone did amazing. The race theme was 'find your super power', which is perfect as we feel like we've both found our super power through the mentoring programme!"

We are incredibly grateful to both Kara and Louise for taking part in this event, for raising much needed funds and helping build awareness of our charity and the mutual benefits of mentoring.

Kara's JustGiving page is still open - if you'd like to donate please click here. The funds raised will support our mission to empower girls like Kara, by providing them with experiences and resources to help build their confidence and shape their futures.
